MEN'S SQUAD

November 2006.
The Men’s Squad is currently on a high and has grown in size over recent months to include 38 oarsmen. The Senior and Development crews have been going from strength to strength under the excellent direction of Peter Summers, Adrian Marsh and Martyn Taylor. Crews and coaches plan to take boats to both local and major national Head Races (Wallingford Head (December), Head of the Trent (February), Head of the River (March)) in the lead up to the Summer 2007 regatta season, hopefully culminating in qualifying crews for Henley Royal Regatta in July.

“Prof” Peter Summers and Dr Adrian Marsh are primarily responsible for coaching the Senior Squad.. Crews are currently training for The Head of The River in March 2007 with the aim of having a boat finish in the top 100. Training comprises of water sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings (6:30pm) and on Saturday and Sunday mornings (double outings at 7:30am and 9:30am). Land training takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and usually involves cycling, ergo-ing, circuit training, weights or running. The Squad’s 1st VIII recently finished 3rd overall at the Dee Autumn Head and the S2 IV- and a S3 IV + both had good rows at the Fuller’s Fours Head.

The Senior Squad contains both home-grown and imported talent. Several members have rowed at the top level whilst representing their former schools or clubs, one even has an international cap! The combination of the experience and skill of our Senior Oarsmen with that of our up-and-coming young freshmen promises that the profile of the Pengwern men is on course to rise over the coming months and years. The squad welcomes all Senior Oarsmen but a high level of commitment to the prescribed training would be required to make the top boats.

Mr Martyn Taylor coaches the Development Squad, they plan to enter local Head Races in 2007 as well as The Head of the River in March. The Development Squad feeds the Senior Squad with oarsmen who display the most enthusiasm, commitment, fitness and skill; as such there is fluid movement between the squads. The Development Squad trains on the water on Saturday and Sunday mornings (double outings at 7:30 and 9:30am) and land based training takes place during the evenings from Monday to Thursday.

Guy Maxfield is responsible for co-ordinating the men’s squad, if you have any queries regarding the training of the men’s squad please contact him on 07832 375010 or alternatively email him at guymaxfield@hotmail.com.
