Juniors at Worcester
9/9/07
It was a day of mixed fortunes for Pengwern juniors at Worcester on Saturday.
The boys J14 coxed quad had waited all summer to compete for the first time because of a lack of opposition in their J13 age group or because of the floods. They finally took to the water in a straight final against a much more experienced crew from Llandaff. They were well beaten but made a brave attempt urged on by their cox Rachael and a vociferous crowd of supporters on the bank. It was good experience for them and now we know what to work on for next season!
The girls fared much better in their two, well-subscribed events.
The double of 16 year olds Felicity Preece and Alice Windows, sculling as Novice women, beat crews from Llandaff and Ross by large margins before losing a hard fought final to Llandaff’s A crew.
Most successful Junior was Jess Knott who won the Women’s J16 single sculls beating two scullers from Gloucester and one from Wallingford on the way.
As usual, if there had been a cup for the loudest supporters group Pengwern would have won that hands down! Many thanks to all the Mums, Dads, (and little brother) for all their help.

Update: May 2006.
The squad at present consists of 52 active members between the ages of 12 and 18, plus a further 19 youngsters from Sundorne and Wakeman schools who have recently begun learning to row at the Club under the Project Oarsome scheme. Already 33 Juniors have competed, or are intending to compete, in Regattas this season.
Unfortunately the pressures on equipment and available coaches arising from such a large squad, not to mention the safety implications, means that the Club can take on no more Juniors at present. Indeed there is a waiting list of 30 youngsters who wish to join the Club.
Pengwern Juniors have already had several successes this season with at least one win at every event entered. At the West Midlands Junior time trials at Worcester in March Daniella Baur won the Women’s J16 single sculls and continued her string of successes with wins at Leicester Regatta (WJ16 1X) and Shrewsbury both in the Women’s Novice event and in the WJ16 1X.

(Shrewsbury), and Women’s J15 double, Camilla Powell and Amy Thomas (Shrewsbury Sprint). Camilla and Amy picked up their second win of the day at Shrewsbury Sprint with Lucy Price, Alice Windows and cox Felicity Preece in the Women’s J15 coxed Quad.
Daniella Baur will be competing in the WJ16 single sculls at the National Schools Regatta on May 28th. Other Regattas at which Pengwern B.C. Juniors hope to compete are Bridgnorth on June 10th, Stratford upon Avon on June 17th and Ironbridge on June 24th and 25th and Burton on July 9th. We also hope to run a Fun Regatta for all Juniors and Project Oarsome youngsters in mid-July.
